EVENT ALERT: Incl(YOU)sion Pt. 2: Voices of Underrespresented Muslim Identities
As the U.S. draws near the 18th anniversary of the September 11th attacks during the second year of the Trump administration’s racism and xenophobia, venomous rhetoric and policy-making toward Islam and Muslims have gained enormous prominence. Considered a marginalized group, Muslim Americans are shaping their own narrative by countering such harms through advocacy, mobilization, and coalition building.
However, there are groups within their own community experiencing further marginalization due to their gender, sexuality, socioeconomic class, age, race, color or physical/mental state. How do these community members face threats by Washington while dealing with the lack of acknowledgement, value, or inclusion from their own faith community? Through conversation with leading advocates of these groups, we will seek to understand and empathize what these marginalized communities endures. Inasmuch, we will find intersectionalities that could exist within the Islam faith that can make life better for the entire Muslim American community.
