Some two dozen states have recently either passed or considered laws that would ban the use of sharia law in their court systems.

Due to ignorance and fear, there are proposals to ban Sharia law from being incorporated into or superceding the U.S. Constitution. However, Sharia is simply a code of conduct for Muslims to lead healthy and peaceful lives and poses no threat to non-Muslim societies.

On November 15, 2011, CAIR-Chicago’s Communications Coordinator Amina Sharif joined a panel discussion on the Constitutionality of legislation, proposed in 25 states, banning Sharia law. The panel included Chicago-Kent Constitutional Law Professors Steven J. Heyman and Mark Rosen.

The idea that is being propagated by some conservative political leaders and media outlets is that Sharia is an imminent threat to American society. This is simply not true, and the recent legislative push to ban Sharia from th U.S. is not only a waste of time and taxpayer money, it's a fear-mongering movement that only creates divisions between Americans based on ideology.

"I think that we need to understand that Sharia is just religious law; to the extent that people use religious law as a part of their everyday lives. The majority of Muslims here don't want to see Sharia imposed as some part of a government obligation, or anything of that sort," said Christina Abraham.

I was disappointed that the letters you chose to run in response to your Aug. 22 editorial "The burquini ban" expressed an extremely inaccurate portrayal of Islam. Sharia actually condemns forced marriages and so-called "honor killings."
