Chicago Libyans, Muslims hold candlelight vigil for Ambassador Stevens

On September 14, 2012, nearly 150 Chicago Libyans and Muslims gathered on the corner of Congress and Michigan to hold a candlelight vigil for the late Ambassador Christopher Stevens. The vigil was coordinated by CAIR-Chicago, Syrian American Council Chicago (SAC), MAS (Muslim American Society), Zakat Foundation, and AMP (American Muslims for Palestine).

Various media outlets including NBC, CBS, and ABC, attended the event and interviewed members of the Libyan and Muslim community about the attacks on the U.S. embassy in Libya that left Ambassador Stevens and three other Americans dead.

Members of the community held signs that stated: "This Muslim is offended by attacks on my embassy," "May Allah rest your soul in peace Ambassador Chris Stevens," and "An attack on American embassies is an attack on American Muslims."

The vigil was meant to honor the life of Ambassador Stevens, it was also a time to express condemnation against the violence that took the lives of four American citizens in Libya. The vigil was also held to stand up against any attacks on U.S. embassies, and to challenge the bigotry and hate that is meant to defile the Prophet Muhammad.
